Fashion & Lifestyle: Homemade Ding Dongs :)

Homemade Ding Dongs :)

So the other day I had a to bring a dessert to dinner at my friends house and the only dessert my oven will cook is cake. It SUCKS!! I have tried to make cookies probably 20 times and it hasn't worked. It is so frustrating.. Anyway, so I stick to recipes that consist of a cake mix. I ended up making this...
Look familiar?? :) It is a giant Ding Dong! (I know it looks more like a football than a Ding Dong but it was Sunday and football was on my mind ha ha) I wasn't sad when Hostess went out of business because I have never really loved any of their product but this was actually really good!! And tasted a lot like a Ding Dong. It was also super easy!

CAKE- Bottom Layer
1 box of chocolate (devils food works too), plus the ingredients called for on the box.
I made 2 so I cooked them in my 2 round cake pans. I am sure it would work if you wanted to do cupcakes, or a 9x13 too.
When cake is finished cooking let it completely cool. Mine cooled for at least an hour and a half. Take the cake out of the pan after it is cooled if you want to ice it like mine (on the sides too) it will be a lot easier to ice.

While cake is cooling start making the cream filling.

CREAM FILLING - Middle Layer
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
4 cups powdered sugar
3 tablespoons milk

Cream butter and shortening in a mixing bowl, then slowly add remaining ingredients. Beat until mixture is thick, but spreadable.
*My husband said it could have used more cream in the middle(that is his favorite part) so I think next time I will double the cream recipe. When your cake looks like this ^^ (above) put it in the freezer while you make the chocolate glaze. It only takes about 15 minutes if that!CHOCOLATE GLAZE - Top Layer1/2 cup butter1/2 cup cocoa powder2 cups powdered sugar4 tablespoons milk

In a medium sauce pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the coca and whisk until smooth. Remove from heat and mix in the powdered sugar and milk. Remove cake from freezer and evenly frost with the glaze(it is pretty runny so don't worry, it will harden like a regular ding dong).
STORE DING DONGS IN THE FRIDGE.

Then you can make whatever design you want on top!! :) I think real Ding Dongs have swirls. If you have any questions please ask! I thought it was super easy if you follow the directions.
Have a great evening!! :)
XOXO
